Groovy 60's kitch, masterful orchestral colors!
by Bret Wheadon (April 26, 2002)
When Hammer films decided to do a film adaption of Dennis Wheatley's novel "Uncharted Seas," it made a wise decision in asking classical composer Gerard Schurmann to provide the score (at first, Benjamin Frankel, who had composed the score to Hammer's "The Curse of the Werewolf" was enlisted, but dropped after his score was deemed unsuitable). Schurmann's score is filled with exciting and colorful orchestral cues, filled with brass and percussion, and dynamic action flourishes. Accompanying his wonderful score are a couple of artifacts from the 1960's: the theme song, written by Roy Phillips, is a perfect snapshot of late-1960's shmooze, with enough lounge-kitch for the most ardent fan. Nevertheless, fans of big orchestral action and horror scores should not pass this release up, as it stands as one of Hammer Films most glorious scores.
