Between the Bonds

Previously released in 1992 on Geoff Leonard's Play It Again label, "Elizabeth Taylor in London" gets a brand new 2006 release on the El label. This score is from the television special which aired internationally in 1963, a special in which world-class superstar Elizabeth Taylor (fresh from the filming of "Cleopatra"), takes us through the places and history of London (and was paid a handsome $250,000--a record at the time for a TV special), all to the lush orchestral score by John Barry. The original Colpix album was billed as Elizabeth Taylor's major recording debut. Barry's music was nominated for an Emmy and it led him to do "Sophia Loren In Rome", another international TV special, in 1964.

In its day it was perhaps a little too traditional next to the exciting scores that Barry was turning out year after year. It doesn't have that great Bond style that typified practically everything else that Barry wrote at the time. Nevertheless, Barry has an evergreen talent for writing strong themes. His "Elizabeth" and "London" themes are particularly lush sounding in both form and structure.

According to the liner notes of the original Colpix album, Elizabeth Taylor, with the TV show's producers, made the selections from Wordsworth, Churchill, Pitt, Queen Elizabeth, Queen Victoria and Elizabeth Barrett Browning that you'll hear Taylor read on this recording. John Barry was with the group constantly during the shooting of the special and had completed the sound track before they wrapped up the final scene.

This is different to the previous release of this score in three ways. First, it's only the "Elizabeth" score (the other also included "Four In The Morning"). Second, it has the original Colpix cover art. Third, this is the version with Elizabeth Taylor's narration over some of the tracks. It's obvious that the producers have lifted these tracks from the original Colpix LP surface and sound quality overall is not great.

However, John Barry's score is gloriously romantic including many beautiful tracks that have justifiably become favourites among the composer's many fans.

TV Special Given Special Treatment

Oh, so dated ... but for a one-off TV special what a score!
