Quarter of original, but still nice
by
Dorian (May 10, 2004)
La Surprise Du Chef is one of eight Pascal Thomas movies, whose score is included on volume 18 of Cosma Cinéma Collection. Unfortunately, while the other scores on this superb CD usually contain either the whole content of original 45rpm, or even previously unreleased material, La Surprise Du Chef had a bad luck in being the only one of these eight movies to originally have an LP release. And, because the CD times given to each movie are, in principle, equal, La Surprise Du Chef had to be drastically shorten.
Only three out of twelve (!) tracks from the original LP made it onto the CD. These include the main theme, which I find very typically Cosma-like high-spirited, with great instruments' changes. Then we have one of the worst Cosma's tracks, "Cha-cha de St Chartres". Very slow, boring and having nothing in common with what we know as good music. The third track is, however, very nice bolero version of the main theme, which sounds particularly well immediately after the main theme.
Although nine more tracks from the LP were not re-released, we can find one "bonus" track on the CD - the song "Vieni Qui" sung by Marino Marini. The song is great - half love, half melancholy, I definitely like it. It enhances the spirit of the score for several points. Still, I cannot understand why the rest of the score wasn't released. And, where should one nowadays obtain the original 1976 LP?
