Melancholy Beauty with Flute and Violins
by
Christina Vining (February 5, 2008)
My interest in collecting cinema score recordings began with this music. Along with The Changeling soundtrack, this one's been a favorite of mine since 1988 when I saw the Flowers movie, and made my own crude, homemade recording of the bits of music not covered by actors' voices.

Young's music is quietly melancholy, featuring flute backed by violins and cello, mainly. There is a brief music box theme, and a few dramatic, heart-stopping moments, but over all, this music is excellent company for an introspective, quiet, solitary mood.

Track 4 contains a segment which is soft, slow and brooding, very memorable, to me it is like hearing a desolate story of events long in the past.

A piano lead-in segment midway through track 10 is something I'd have loved to hear on its own, as it is in the movie, rather than blended into the rest of the music in this track.

Track 12, The VCA Waltz stands out, as well. It begins gently hopeful, major cheerful notes, then turns sad. As someone who did not care for the movie but likes the series of books this story is based upon, I appreciate this little tribute to the late author.

Everyone has his own associations to music, for me, this soundtrack reminds me of the books, particularly the final one, Garden of Shadows--it doesn't evoke thoughts of children or of the disappointing movie this lovely soundtrack accompanies.

Beautifully Haunting
by a soundtrack collector (May 31, 2003)
I have been after this soundtrack for many years, I have only recently been able to listen to it and I must say, it WAS worth waiting for! The soundtrack is able to carry the very essence of what the film it is portraying on screen which is quite rare. With the use of string instruments and choir voices ocassionally, Christopher Young was able to create a beautifully haunting score which is very addictable to listen too. Highly recommended if you can lay you're hands on it.
