Four-show retrospective of screen-duo's finest.
by Bret Wheadon (December 25, 2001)
"Mickey & Judy" is a four-disc showcase for the once-hot on-screen pairing of Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland, who appeared in roughly a dozen movies together, including the popular, though slight, "Andy Hardy" series. But their most successful collaborations were found in the shows presented here in their entirety: "Babes In Arms," "Babes On Broadway," "Strike Up The Band," and "Girl Crazy." For these productions, Rooney's slap-dash humor and Garland's alternately brassy/tender singing received their full due.
It doesn't hurt that they're singing songs by some of the great American songwriter's either; Rogers and Hart and George and Ira Gershwin's songs receive first class readings by Ms. Garland, while Harold Arlen, E.Y. Harburg, Harold Rome, and Arthur Freed also contribute songs.
In typical Rhino form, each disc contains the full score of each film, including dance music, alternate takes, outtakes, and demo recordings. Also, a fat booklet has been included with exaustive liner notes and packed with photos.
