Very good music.
by
David Penn (October 7, 2003)
The score to "The Ninth Gate", in my opinion, is one of the best scores to come out of the 20th century. The darken tone and forewarning feel of the opening titles get you in the mood for a really good film. Wrongly labeled as a horror film, "The Ninth Gate" is more like a mystery, accentuated perfectly by the score. As far as I know, Wojciech Kilar scored only one other film, "Bram Stoker's Dracula". His unique style is so utterly original, and he adds a sense of antiquity to both films. He combines atmosphere and storytelling in his music, and creates the dark, threatening under-current presence in both "The Ninth Gate" and "Dracula". I am very fond of dark and spooky music, and Wojciech Kilar is one of the privilaged few who have mastered that art.
