An extraordinary score by Leonard Rosenman
by
Bret Wheadon (January 23, 2008)
One of the things that stands out among the many Planet of the Apes sequels that cluttered the 1970s was the incredible music that helped the overall feeling of a world tuned upside down. Leonard Rosenman's twisted score to "Beneath The Planet Of The Apes" is a perfect example.

After the groundbreaking soundtrack the Jerry Goldsmith provided for the original film, Mr. Rosenman wisely chose to further the percussive nature of that score by adding discordant strings, blaring horns, and sung litanies which turned hymn "All Things Bright and Beautiful" on it's head. For years the weird choral chants of this film haunted me, and is easily the most memorable piece of music from any of the Apes films, with the possible exception of the ram's horn used by Goldsmith in the first film.

Film Score Monthly has done a super job with the packaging and re-mastering, going so far as to include as bonus material the entire original soundtrack LP, which consisted of re-recorded material and spoken excerpts. A world-tilting, disturbing, and extraordinary score.
