Loud, proud, n' pissed!
by Alex (November 25, 2006)
Not my type of score really but Mansell weaves the score with an undeniable sense of fun. Mostly driven by speed-metal accoustics or atmospheric electronics, I was surprised there was an actual orchestra used in the recording of the score. If you listen closely, orchestral elements, string passages in particularly, are used frequently, though conductor Bruce Fowler's orchestrations go almost unnoticed, buried under the score's other elements. As the title of my review should suggest, most of the music is mostly comprised of heavy drums and electric guitars. A chorus is used sparsely but effectively. The gentler moments on the disk ("C24" and "Sibling Rivalry") are reserved for the brother-sister theme, comprised of soft strings and what sound almost like wind-chimes.
This score is hardly easy listening, and most film score snobs will probably dismiss it as loud, abrasive crapola. Their opinions may have some grounds, but DAMN does this music let off some steam (as others have mentioned). A little long at an hour but a very enjoyable, agressive listen.
