Will Never Happen Again!
by
Thomas Kiefner (November 4, 2003)
As David Raskin commented before the concert, "This is our night, when for a moment, our music comes stage center." This is the concept of this 1963 concert performed at the Hollywood Bowl. What is so incredible about this CD is that the selections were conducted by the composers themselves. The concert starts of with Al Newman conducting "How The West Was Won," followed by David Raskin conducting "Laura," followed by Alex North conducting "Cleopatra" selections, followed by Franz Waxman conducting "A Place In The Sun", followed by Johnny Green with "Raintree County," then Percy Faith and "Theme From A Summer Place." Bernard Herrmann steps to the podium and does "Memory Waltz" and "North By Northwest." Next is Dimitri Tiomkin doing "Green Leaves Of Summer" and "High Noon." Miklos Rozsa conducts selections from "Ben Hur." And to end it all Al Newman comes back and does his "Conquest." When I thought about how great it would have been to have seen a concert like that in person, I was in shock. The recording itself is not the best quality, nor is the performance of the orchestra, but it is definitely worth having in your collection if you can find a copy of it.
