Duel In the Sun

It is NOT the soundtrack I am looking for as there wasn't one! The original recording was by the Boston Pops on RCA, Three 10" 78rpm records. Any one have a clue?

There are several compilations one of which I had (now burned to a CD) but it did not contain the Orizaba. I don't recall if the Spanish Dance was included.

We all loved the impotent scene where all the "boys" of Spanish Bit rode to the border fence lead by Lionel Barrymore, can you believe? The scoring for that scene beginning to end is a gem, long and thrilling but gone, leaving us only glimpses. I still gag at Barrymore's submission at the fence.

Most of the major theme was in the opening of the picture. You may remember the voice over announcer intoning, "Ladies and Gentlemen, the Overture to Duel in the Sun." To every boy of us we knew we were in for a dog!

Tiomkin is flashy and fun for me, but he ain't no Max Steiner (paragon) or Franz Waxman and Jerry Goldsmith my favorites. I used to like Korngold (still do) until Jerry talked me out of it because he felt K never caught the muse of the picture he was scoring, e.g. Captain Blood and The Sea Hawk terribly British types were scored by Germanic-type themes and scoringg. Jerry was fond of Vaughn Williams and Prokofiev and he showed it.
First Score I fell in love with that really made me conscious of film music was Waxman's Objective Burma.

Irwin Moss, LA

PS. All I have written is from memory. I have never seen the movie since its opening at Loew's State Theater in Syracuse, N.Y.

Just to let you know, there is a soundtrack and I have one, but it has a crack. Have been trying to find a copy on CD since it is too expensive to transfer to disk.
