Alexandre Desplat's The Light Between Oceans
2-Sep-2016 -

Lakeshore Records has released The Light Between Oceans - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack both digitally and on CD September 2, 2016. The album features an original score from the Academy Award®-winning composer Alexandre Desplat (THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL, ARGO, THE KING’S SPEECH).

Director Derek Cianfrance has been a longtime fan of Desplat’s work. “Filmmaking demands collaborative inspiration and trust. Desplat’s music inspired the script,” Cianfrance stated. Cianfrance had Desplat write a piano piece specifically for Alicia Vikander’s character, Isabel, in order to actually play in the scenes. Once Alicia mastered it for the film, the piece became the emotional North Star for the tonal palette of the score. He concluded, “Over the next few months, I was able to collaborate with a true master. His music gave my film coh
erence, emotion, and most importantly, soul. Working with him was nothing short of a dream come true.”

Desplat on the other hand knew the director could tell a love story without sentimentalism while simultaneously creating powerful camera moves to express tension. “He turned what seemed at first to be an intimate film and took the audience into a strong epic ride,” Desplat stated. “This passion I encountered when we worked closely on the score with Derek, sharing with me the journey of a composer, made of solitude and doubts, with kindness but also high expectations.”

THE LIGHT BETWEEN OCEANS is a heart-breaking drama about fate, love, moral dilemmas and the lengths to which one couple will go to see their dreams realized. In the years following World War I, Tom Sherbourne (Michael Fassbender), a young veteran still numb from his years in combat, takes a job as lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock, a remote island off the coast of Western Australia. As the island’s sole inhabitant, he finds comfort in the monotony of the chores and the solitude of his surroundings. When he meets the daughter of the school’s headmaster, Isabel Graysmark (Alicia Vikander), in the local townof Partageuse on the mainland, Tom is immediately captivated by her beauty, wit and passion, and they are soon married and living on the island. As their love flourishes, he begins to feel again, their happiness marred only by their inability to start a family, so wh
en a rowboat with a dead man and infant girl mysteriously washes ashore, Isabel believes their prayers may have finally been answered. As a man of principle, Tom is torn between reporting the lost child and pleasing the woman he loves, and against his better judgment he agrees to let Isabel raise the child as their own, making a choice with devastating consequences.

Oscar®-winning composer Alexandre Desplat is one of the most coveted film composers in the world today. Desplat is noted for his collaborations with some of the world’s top filmmakers: Wes Anderson, George Clooney, Stephen Daldry, David Fincher, Stephen Frears, Tom Hooper, Ang Lee, Terrence Malick, Roman Polanski and Angelina Jolie garnering eight Academy Award nominations.
