World Soundtrack Award nominees announced
23-Aug-2002 - GHENT (22 August 2002). Patrick Doyle, James Horner, Randy Newman, Howard Shore and Hans Zimmer are nominated for this year’s World Soundtrack Award for Composer of the Year, it was announced today by the World Soundtrack Academy’s Jacques Dubrulle and Marian Ponnet. Also nominated in other award categories are Danny Elfman, John Williams, Elliot Goldenthal and Sting. The 2002 World Soundtrack Awards ceremony takes place in Ghent on 19 October.

Nominees in three categories of the World Soundtrack Awards are selected by the 180+ membership of the World Soundtrack Awards. Regular membership is restricted to active film music composers around the world. In a second voting round, members will now select the winner in each of the three categories. Both the first and second voting rounds are conducted by PriceWaterhouseCoopers. More details on WSA rules, members and activities can be found on World Soundtrack Awards.

Hans Zimmer is heading this year’s nominees list with four nominations in three categories: Soundtrack Composer of the Year, Best Original Soundtrack of the Year (both for Black Hawk Down) and twice in Best Original Song Written for Film (Spirit, Stallion of Cimarron). This while Randy Newman received three nominations for Monsters Inc. A shortlist of candidates for the Discovery of the Year Award will be released in September.

PUBLIC CHOICE AWARD: Film music enthusiast from around the world in the meantime are also invited to select the winner of the Public Choice Award. They can do this until 15 September on World Soundtrack Awards, as well as via forms in a number of publications that support the awards: ‘Dreams’, ‘Film Score Monthly’, ‘Music For The Movies’ and ‘Score’. Public Choice Award voters can win a fully organized trip for two to the WSA Ceremony in Ghent.
All award winners will be presented on 19 October at a ceremony preceding the Fenton-Delerue: A Film Music Celebration special concert at Ghent’s Bijloke concert hall. It’s the final part in a four-day programme celebrating film music and composers (for further information please go to: World Soundtrack Awards).
