Andrea Guerra's Extraordinary Measures

<![CDATA[ Lakeshore Records has released the score for Extraordinary Measures. The story starts with John Crowley (Brendan Fraser) who's two young kids have a deadly disease called Pompa. And are not expected to live long. Much of the heartbreaking of him and his wife (Keri Russell). But John one day decides to try and do something, he goes to see a doctor and scientist Robert Stonehill (Harrison Ford) who's research about the disease could be helpful. And John will help Stonehill set his research, in hopes to make a cure. But will they is the question? The score is written by Andrea Guerra. It's a piano and strings score that relies on the arrangements. Guerra utilizes electronics occasionally more for percussion and to add some tension and conflict to the sound. Tracks like "Her Eyes", "The Lake", "Breakdown" and "On The Road" shine through though because they find a way to step apart from the formulaic material of the film.

<![CDATA[ Varèse Sarabande has released the score for Tooth Fairy, the story of Dwayne Johnson, who is the TOOTH FAIRY, also known as Derek Thompson, a hard-charging hockey player whose nickname comes from his habit of separating opposing players from their bicuspids. At first, Derek “can’t handle the tooth” — bumbling and stumbling as he tries to furtively wing his way through strangers’ homes…doing what tooth fairies do. But as Derek slowly adapts to his new position, he begins to rediscover his own forgotten dreams. Veteran composer George S. Clinton (Austin Powers, Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee) delivers a fun and soaring score.

Marco Beltrami/Buck Sanders' The Hurt Locker

<![CDATA[ Lakeshore Records has released the score for The Hurt Locker, an intense portrayal of elite soldiers who have one of the most dangerous jobs in the world: disarming bombs in the heat of combat. When a new sergeant, James, takes over a highly trained bomb disposal team amidst violent conflict, he surprises his two subordinates, Sanborn and Eldridge, by recklessly plunging them into a deadly game of urban combat. James behaves as if he's indifferent to death. As the men struggle to control their wild new leader, the city explodes into chaos, and James' true character reveals itself in a way that will change each man forever. What sticks out about the score is that the music is intended to be powerful but subtle most of the time, and not a score that drowns out any of the film's critical scenes. The score is nominated for an Oscar and was a cooperative composition job between Buck Sanders and Marco Beltrami. The duo worked together on a variety of films in the past, and their chemistry shows in their musical work for this movie.

John Murphy's Armored

It's the story of a newbie guard for an armored truck company, who is coerced by his veteran coworkers to steal a truck containing $42 million. But a wrinkle in their supposedly foolproof plan divides the group, leading to a potentially deadly resolution. Renowned composer John Murphy (Sunshine, 28 Weeks Later, Snatch, Last House On The Left) harnesses all the thrills and double-crosses in this breakneck actioner with another one of his trademark propulsive music scores. An exhilarating sonic experience.

Released in 1983, the movie begins in Istanbul, 1920 and tells the story of spoiled heiress Eve Tozer (Bess Armstrong) who has come from London to find her father, Bradley (Wilford Brimley), a brilliant inventor/entrepreneur who has gone missing. The London courts have been convinced by Bradley’s former business partner, Bentik, that he is dead and if he can’t be located in three weeks, his assets will go to his ex-partner. To support the romance and adventure elements of the film, producers Raymond Chow and Fred Weintraub turned to veteran composer John Barry. His music for HIGH ROAD TO CHINA includes an exciting flying motif and a love theme that could only been have been penned by one man, along with the kind of travelogue style music the composer would write for a James Bond film and adaptations of various period source cues indicative of the 1920s.

Mychael&Jeff Danna's The Imaginarium Of Dr. Parnassus

<![CDATA[ Silva Screen Records and Lions Gate Records have released the score for The Imaginarium Of Dr. Parnassus. Director Terry Gilliams’ Worlds of candy canes, mile high ladders, giant cobras come and go and transform into other wonders. To underline the dream-like states and fantastical elements of Gilliam’s cinematography, Jeff and Mychael Danna produced a breathtaking and surprising post-modern score. Tangos, Waltzes, Tibetan monastic chant, Mediaeval Music and a greasy noir-ish saxophone tune for Tom Wait's characterization of Satan all mix together with a full orchestra and a couple of show-stopping songs. The brothers last collaborated with Terry Gilliam on his 2005 film Tideland. “In writing the score for Terry Gilliam’s Doctor Parnassus we sought to create music as timeless and archaic as the immortal Doctor himself,” says Mychael Danna. The score is performed by the Budapest Film Orchestra and conducted by Nicholas Dodd.

John Williams' Black Sunday

<![CDATA[ Finally on CD! Black Sunday, released by Film Score Monthly. Black Sunday is a minor masterpiece of grim 1970s international espionage (decades later, Steven Spielberg and John Williams would revisit the genre in Munich). Much of the film’s success is owed to director Frankenheimer, renowned for his handling of large-scale physical action in films such as The Train, Grand Prix and French Connection II. The film’s climax at the Super Bowl—much of it shot at the actual Super Bowl X—features some of the most spectacular footage ever captured for a Hollywood movie. John Williams was a natural choice to score Black Sunday. Not only was he a veteran of the 1970s disaster cycle (The Poseidon Adventure, The Towering Inferno) but his landmark score to Jaws marked him as Hollywood’s top composer at a time when Paramount Pictures was positioning Black Sunday to be the blockbuster of 1977 (a claim to fame shortly taken by Star Wars). This premiere release is in complete chronological order, remixed by Mike Matessino from the original 16-track 2” masters recorded on the Paramount Pictures scoring stage.

The CD is available through Amazon.com. More info at Film Score Monthly. ]]>

Sergey Yevtushenko's The Last Station

<![CDATA[ Varèse Sarabande has released the score for The Last Station. It's the story of the final year of Russian socialist writer Leo Tolstoy which comes to the screen with Christopher Plummer in the lead role. The central issue is the status of Tolstoy's will as regards the custody of his literary estate. Long assumed to be the provenance of his wife, the Countess Sofya (Helen Mirren), it's now being claimed by Tolstoy's chief disciple, Chertkov (Paul Giamatti), as the rightful property of the Russian people. Very close, he believes, to getting the old man to sign away his life's work to the public domain, Chertkov engages the fastidious, worshipful young Valentin (James McAvoy) to become the writer's new assistant and Chertkov's spy, obliged to record and report everything said in the fraught household. The classically beautiful score by St. Petersberg composer Sergey Yevtushenko captures the majesty of the Russian landscape and the drama of Tolstoy’s life.

The score is available from Amazon.com, Amazon UK, Amazon France and Amazon Germany.
